i know my place

i realised that i have really been arrogant in my assumptions and my judgments. and that i think i am super-loved, and super-smart, and super-in-the-crowd. what misconstrued perceptions i have.

2 events happened in the past week that put me back in my place. who i am to people, and what they really think of me.

shattered i am, but thankful for the reminder.

i know my place now.

In my place, in my place,
Were lines that I couldn't change,
I was lost, oh yeah.

I was lost, I was lost,
Crossed lines I shouldn't have crossed,
I was lost, oh yeah.

Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Yeah, how long must you pay for it?
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
For it...

I was scared, I was scared,
Tired and underprepared,
But I'll wait for it.

If you go, if you go,
And leave me down here on my own,
then I'll wait for you.

Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
Yeah, how long must you pay for it?
Yeah, how long must you wait for it?
For it, ya...

Singin' please, please, please,
Come back come and sing to me,
To me, me.

Come on and sing it out, now, now.
Come on and sing it out, to me, me.
Come back and sing to me.

In my place, in my place,
Were lines that I couldn't change,
I was lost, oh yeah.
Oh yeah.

unfounded worries

the case of the missing thai man.

there was a thai man who works at at this unnamed site near jalan bahar. he was generally a very conscientious worker, and never once did he shirk his responsibilities. his peers were very glad to have him around, because not only did he keep the team together, he never once failed to lend a helping hand to any of his peers whom he sees requiring it.

one day, after the completion of a project, this particular thai worker suddenly disappeared. although initially, his disappearance went unnoticed, after some time, his fellow workers began to get worried. they did not know what had happened to this good friend of theirs. he never once missed work, and he was definitely not an irresponsible man. even the ones who usually see him around, began to question.

some thought that he was tired of the work that he was doing, understanding that the work was definitely not easy. some thought he was harbouring unpleasantries against them for some unknown reasons. some thought he was thowing a tantrum for his work was apparently unappreciated. some thought many other things. but no one really knew.

and i tried to find out, with much effort.

and found out that this thai worker was seriously misperceived, and that he was in no way doing anything that would let anyone down. he was doing what he felt he should do, working in silence and away from the normal crowd, just so that he would achieve his aims better. secretly his hands moved, silently his words spoke, softly his firmness and determination showed. all for the greater good.

i am ever in awe of him. and i suppose i will always be.

i had said that in giving up power, he would gain and work with an even greater authority. so he proves it to me, that in his ways, he is guided by a greater power, and a clarity of thought beyond many others.

our worries truly were unfounded.
pray for his well-being and his success.

NTUMS Appreciation Tea

the above event was sumthing i really looked forward to at the end of the week. spent a good hour preparing myself, deciding my ensemble. and came up with this combi of the white top we got for kitsitra's performance, my brown pants, and a cambodian silk shawl that my sister gifted me. the shawl was purple (so metro!) to keep to the theme of something pink or purple.

the appreciation tea is actually an inaugural event organised by the outgoing 17th exco to recount the events of the past work year, as well as to celebrate the volunteers who came forward to lend their abilities for MS events. i arrived looking all fine and dandy, replete with my side purse (you know the bag that accompanies a kain pelikat when you buy it?). i really felt goooood.

then met semua orang-orang yang cukup dirindui, rezuan, osh, farida, firdaus, siddiq, sha... the works!!! it was truly a sweet gathering for me. hahahahah...had a great time, although at some points, i was close to biting the flesh of someone's hand for being a poopy-head...and knowing that he was being a poopy-head...

then abu came around five, and we went for our own tea. then whatever came over him, he even threw in a fish & co's dinner. abu abu abu. such an enigma, even now.

sigh.

p/s: poopyhead man, i think you know who you are. you poop me off again, jaga kau. :) sayang dia.

happy day

went to school early in the morn, had a psycho test to take which went a-ok.

then went to orchard to meet up with herman, he wanted to pass me the invite for the appreciation tea. the poor man rushed from ntu to far east, only to find that my card was for mr yusoff, and not mr nizar. so i wont be able to make it tomorrow for the tea (kidding).

fadiah and karima wanted to meet up along the way, so we did. met shaiful and shahidah along the way. went to watch a movie, harold and kumar go to white castle, which was superbly hilarious. by the way, it was karima's first official visit to the cinema, and we botched it up. movie is NC-16, karima looks 14, uncle at the door asked for ID. hahaha. poor girl. then went into a pitch black cinema, and couldnt find our seats for a good five minutes. i scared fadiah and karima for a teensy while when i squatted down and disappeared. we found our seats, and started laughing immediately. but movie is a big no-no for it shows big no-nos, and karima was embarrassed to the point of laughing. i was embarrassed too. fadiah was like, kill nizar for the recommendation. but what the hell. we had a great laugh.

then went for asar, and to the youth park to see al-falah youth wing and their islamic culture exhibition. was a novel idea, but needed more work on it. well, then met up with taufiq and azfar for dinner. at lucky plaza, met leha and firda. realised i miss tarian like a whole lot. then went to royal plaza on scotts for maghrib. joined up with muslim, adib, shaiful, syahid, hasan, renee over there. miss the kids even more. hahha. then went to apple centre at wheelock with taufiq and azfar and fadiah and karima. i want an apple now.

taufiq left for tarian, azfar left for home, i left for woodlands to accompany the girls for some shopping. two set of shoes, some stockings, a bottle of shampoo and really tired feet later, ended the day at cavana woodland's point for supper. saw terrence and showed him the yearbook. and he was happy.

i am happy.

boarded the train, and waved to herman yr 2 who was alighting.

met so many peeps. sated for a long time. :)

ancients' passage

one thing that i wanted to write for some time already.

the elders of the clan are leaving us one by one. in a short span of a month, two of my grand-uncles have passed on, and my grandfather is sickly. although i have now come to accept this cycle of life, i cannot help but be poignant. the elders were the link that the younger generation held to, the ones through whom we recognise our brethren, and find that connection. but i fear that once they pass on, that link would be broken, and we would begin to drift apart from each other. i hope that that does not happen. i pray that the bonds remain strong enough to keep us all.

ila hadratil aa'li Khan Surattee, al-ahya-i minhum wal amwat, wa qarabatihim, wa ila hadratil Muhammad s.a.w wa a'la aa'lihi wasahbihi wasallim.

Alfatihah.

hiatus over

well.

i am back.

it was kind of a relief to have the net back at home, since school banned certain sites from being accessed, such as the blogs (the chatterboxes could not load, can you believe it???) and friendster. for that i have to thank my mother, for kindly sponsoring the payment.

i was really lost the past few weeks, and cut off from the world. it was a choice i had to make, to either lose my handphone connection or my internet connection. at first glance i had to go with my internet connection, knowing that i still had the opportunity to check up the net from school. but eventually, it so hit me that i needed both, badly. it is not a case of addiction mind you, it is just that i really needed the net to do my research (which is really a lot of research) and my correspondence with my team members.

a lot of things have happened which i would like to pen down, but my memory does not serve me well enough. so if someday i remember through a jolt, i will recapitulate what i have missed out.

but for now,

hi all, again.

clarity and non-clarity

had a good talk yesterday. sincerest one ever. told things that i never thought i would have said ever. but it helped to make things clear, and set things in perspective. so that is good.

but what was the effect?

i know that things did get through. but i still do not know what the outcome is. and what the outcome will be. for the first time, i am lost for words, and lost for emotions truly.

i have been left free to do what i saw fit. as long as i am happy. but my actions will be judged nonetheless.

is it that difficult to make demands, and to decide what you want, instead of letting me have reign?

it goes back again. vicious cycle.

*head finally throbbing*

non-interneticus et mobilus phonus absentus

disease: non-interneticus

symptoms: intense malaise and boredom, withdrawal from virtual world, loss of finger dexterity due to decreased typing activities, general misinformation due to decreased socialisation; may also lead to depression and temper flares, and unexplainable poopiheadiness

disease: mobilus phonus absentus

symptoms: phantom fingering of number pad, hyposmses, reduced desire for conversation and speech; also depressive and a sense of hopelessness

treatment: drug called fuloos, a highly debatable anti-depressive which may result in side effects like hyperactivity, hypersocialism, and hyperspenditis, leading to other possible conditions like empticus walletus, eventually leading to more problems such as the two mentioned above, in addition to parentus admonishus and emotional liabilities like sadditis and feelingus like suicidus.

i am currently only suffering from mild non-interneticus and mobilus phonus absentus. No drug treatment been prescribed yet.

but dunno how long i can survive.

flaming financial filligrees

never realised how much of a financial f-wit i am till the last week.

so to all who read and who interact with me on a nightly basis, my apologies beforehand, as i wont be around for a period of time, till i resolve my crap. but i can still receive calls and smses. so i wont be totally cut off.

those who want photos, you can wait.

all the others, have a freaking good life ahead without me.

zoning out, depressed and utterly demoralised and unmotivated,

BRAVO KITSITRA!

it has finally come to pass...

again, another event which brought people together, physically and emotionally has come to an end. Awallah Dondang, organised by NTU-NIE PERBAYU, was a wonderful experience, especially so when you gained so much from it.

firstly, congratulations to the organising committee, for putting together a fantastic cast and crew, and for managing the needs of the performers with a deft hand and a sypathetic heart. it was really something that made us give our all... and also, thank you for realising our talents and giving us the opportunity to showcase that talent...

KITSITRA had a brilliant run during the process of preparing and performing for AD... talent-spotted twice (first by Teater Variasi, a contemporary performing arts group, and second, by none other than Zubir Abdullah, a notable in the Malay Arts scene)... the best performance ever by the group... respect for the maturity that we portrayed... a chance to meet new friends who exhibit great potential in the arts scene... and most importantly to me, the re-strengthening of the bond between old friends...

KITSITRA was conceptualised from an activity we had in jc, gema puisi, where we came together to explore a new art form - artistic poetry. then when we all went to university, it resurfaced again, this time with nura and murshidah spearheading the renaissance. our group expanded to include

razak - lead guitarist and cutie :)
azfar - percussions and cutie too :)
taufiq - vocalist and dancer
osh - bassist, vocalist, hunk
farida - dancer, costumer and soon to be vocalist
hamdan - visual arts engineer... not so cutie...

bringing us to a total of 9 people - 9 supa-talented people (to quote farida's supa catchphrase) whose gifts bring about the art that is KITSITRA... and 9 wonderful people whose friendships are among the most treasured ones to me...

we began with pesta pujangga, which was not so supa due to technical errors which left us very dejected... but the spirit of the group, and knowing the material that we had and what we were made of pushed us onwards... and we were invited to perform again for Awallah Dondang... and no technical errors this time round at least with the music... and i am proud to say, we delivered what we needed to. the crowd was silent and at the end, the applause said it all. the feedback was superb. and we are happy, happy people.

thank you all for this experience, and i know that there will be more to come...

just that...when?

this is the one thing i hate. that at the end of events, we wont meet up as often due to our daily activites and priorities. as it was before. sigh.

and even more so, with my NTU loves. AD was something i really looked forward to 'cos i know i would see them there. now that its done, when will i be able to see them again?

only time will tell.

cryptically clear

In purest of spirit, in vilest of soul

Deny those who maim,
Onus was upon them, but they chose the same,
Never to see, never to feel
Therefore, in negation, they forever kneel.

Cursed be my self,
Allowing deepest stealth,
Rankle my very soul,
Embrace me with cold.

Are you blessed and sated,
Now that I yield,
Your ways will remain unaltered,
Morrow will be same as eve
Or find you now respite, enjoy you now despite
Rage, remorse, regret
Enter my poor heart?

ode to me

Don't be so hard on yourself.
Those tears are for someone else.
I hear your voice on the phone.
I hear you feel so alone.

When we were young,
And truth was paramount.
We were older then,
And we lived our life without any doubt.
Those memories,
They seem so long ago.
What's become of them? When you feel like me I want you to know.

Don't cry.
You're not alone.
Don't cry,
Tonight, my baby.
Don't cry,
You'll always be loved.
Don't cry,
Tonight.
My baby.

Today I dreamed,
Of friends I had before.
And I wonder why.
The ones who care don't call anymore.
My feelings hurt.
But you know I overcome the pain.
And I'm stronger now,
There can't be a fire unless there's a flame.

Limousines and sycophants,
Don't leave me now,
Cause I'm afraid what you've done to me.
Is now the wolf.
In my bed, In my head.

The challenges, we took were hard enough.
They get harder now.
Even when we think that we've had enough.
Don't feel alone,
Cause it's I you understand.
I'm your sedative,
Take a piece of me whenever you can.

Don't Cry - Seal

burn out blues

i used to think that i was a very patient person. but even patient people have their bad times dun they? i guess all this talk about recharging myself is really not going anywhere...i feel myself straining to regain control...but at the same time, i got the tendrils creeping out and lashing at those around me. i pity the innocents hurt by my insensitivities.

example, a wall's ice-cream boy (oklah not so boy, maybe in his teens, but still innocent) came to my door when i was teaching tuition. even before he could say anything, i put my hand up and said, "i am sorry, i have no time for this." and closed the door in his bewildered face. all i heard from him was, "but sir would you like to consider...BAM!"

well, he's gone now. i hope i did not put him off too badly. he was just trying to earn his living. uuurrrrggghhh. sometimes i just want to not be involved. so that i wont feel bad about anything. but now, i am feeling the crappiness that follows doing something as ungracious as that.

wall's ice-cream boy, i am sorry.

here's what i would say to you if i could...

"I had a bad day again
She said I would not understand
She left a note that said I’m sorry, i
I had a bad day again

She spilled her coffee broke a shoelace
Smeared the lipstick on her face
Slammed the door and said I’m sorry, i
I had a bad day again

And she swears there’s nothing wrong
I hear her playing that same old song
She puts me up and puts me on
I had a bad day again

She said I would not understand
She left a note and said I’m sorry i
I had a bad day again
Nooo...

And she swears there’s nothing wrong
I hear her playing that same old song
She puts me up and puts me on
Oh I had a bad day again

She said I would not understand
She left a note that said I’m sorry, i
I had a bad day again
She left a note that said I’m sorry, i
I had a bad day"

farida

there is one more person whom i think deserves special mention for outstanding contributions to my life these past few months. and from the bottom of my heart, i wish to thank you for everything that you have done, either physically or emotionally.

i got to know farida since the ol' secondary school days...then we were mere acquaintances in our respective schools, with nothing more than hi-s and bye-s... but as fate would have it, we came together again, more recently under the umbrella of tarian with perkumpulan seni... and i think our friendship blossomed from then on...

what really struck me was how similar farida was in her outlook towards friends and relationships as compared to me. we are both the same kind of people, expecting to a certain degree the same things from those around us. birds of a feather flock together, ain' it? we have our differences of course, like she's more guy than me in some aspects, and i am more gal than her in others...hahahha but that's for us to know...and you to never find out... but in essence, we perhaps shared a common bond.

and that bond facilitated us in getting to know each other better, and find solace in a companion that could and would understand you... and provide perspectives that you may need to carry on with our altogether messed up lives...hahahah

but that aside, i think farida has given me a lot of help and assistance in many of the activities that i am involved in... venatoris, awallah dondang...the works... well girl, i hope you dun think that i am taking advantage of you, 'cos really, you were the one person i could definitely turn to for help in all the areas that i asked... it is in fact testimony to your capability... and thank you thank you thank you...

i apologise again for that mess last saturday. i really did not mean it.

but that aside, you know i am always a listening ear, and an empathic heart. it's been great, and may it always be so.

'hos forever!

abu sufyan

one person that never struck me the way anybody else before has throughout my experience in NTU is abu sufyan. i first got acquainted with him when i was asked to help out with venatoris as a camp coordinator.

first impressions really differ from what you will eventually get to know about that person.

i remembered that day, when he spoke to us for the first time as chairperson. i did not take to his style immediately. he was assertive and aggressive, and spoke with a no holds barred attitude. he set the tone for the meetings to come, 'cos we were all new to each other, but what i got was that it was not going to be an easy ride. he seemed at that time, aloof and uncompromising.

but i never expected that to eventually bloom into a most dear friendship.

as we went along, through kembara, through the meetings that we had, and through the sharing sessions, i realise that my judgement was indeed way skewed. in fact i grew to accept him and embrace his ways as one utterly unique from that of the others i know.

abu, as a leader, made no compromise towards the quality of work of his team members. abu, as a thinker, contributed measures not conventionally taken, but just as effective or more so. abu, as a team player, ensured the welfare and undying support of his team. abu, as a muslim, realised the importance of subtlety, and worked with a special hidayah that to me, is such a valuable gift of insight from God to him. abu, as a friend, always trusted the capabilities and strengths of his peers and covered up their weaknesses. abu, as a person, knew what should be done and what had to be done, and made sure that it was done, even if it meant that in the process, some people may be slighted.

behind that facade of coolness and apparent disdain, there lay a truly noble, concerned and aware soul. one whose ways were not always accepted, and therefore misunderstood. one whose efforts and sacrifices sometimes seemed under-appreciated, and therefore feels a sense of disappointment.

but truly still, a very aware soul.

it saddens me that only now, when i leave NTU, that i begin to learn of his character. i would have loved to be with him more, and to learn of him better. i hope i still can.

i am honoured and proud that i can count him among my dearest friends. I never expected such a deep attachment to form, but i am gladdened. He will always have that place of respect and pride in my psyche.

Let his voice be heard, and guide those that need guidance back to the Middle Path. Let his heart be healed, and steeled, to face the challenges ahead of him together with his peers. Let his spirit soar, with the rest upon whom the future lies. And let them achieve success as one, and as one, blessed be.

rezuan

many tributes in my blog this time round, but of course all the laureates are worthy... :)

rezuan.

brother of faith since birth, brother in arms since last year, brother in heart for eternity to come, insya Allah.

since his election as a training development officer, he has put forward many concerns that he has with regards to his capabilities in handling the responsibilities that would soon be placed on his shoulders. and he was unsure as to why he was given the appointment in place of other better choices, people whom he felt were more deserving.

well, perhaps i would like to pen down my thoughts with regards to that matter. what exactly is capability, and should capability be viewed in overall context? to me rezuan is very very capable, and it is not just for the fact that among all of us, he is one of the smartest. indeed his track record is almost infallible. but is academic intelligence enough to constitute capability? rezuan found himself questioning that very core of his character, his ability to lead and perform. but as he soon found out, there were many other reasons as to why he was elected to office. and he found solace in some of those reasons. finally, :) those reasons are his to know... and in keeping to my promise i shall refrain from revealing them.

it was worrying when rezuan questioned his capability, and it was even more worrying when he thought that he would be left alone. reassurance no 1: you are never alone. i promise to be there whenever you need me, and i know for a truth, that our friends will never desert you. you were not simply elected because you are smart, but because you have proven in your time that you are worthy and able enough to assist in the running of MS. reassurance no 2: remember your talk with that person. and reassurance no 3: trust in the Divine Agenda, and trust that what He has in plan for you and your peers to be the best for each individual. Everything has a reason, and it's up to you to find that reason.

lastly, i am very proud of you brother. and i will never tire of saying that i have full faith that you will bring us to newer and greater heights. be kind to yourself and others around you. and learn to prioritise. insya Allah, all will fall just nicely into place...

you'll be just fine.

venatoris post mortem

venatoris post mortem happened on thursday 22 july.

i came in and the first thing i heard were complaints on coordination, thus indirectly complaining about me. sheesh. what a way to start rite? but hell, who really cares? the camp ran along just fine to me, given the limits and deviations allowed a typical camp, and at the end of the day, everyone felt that Venatoris '04 was simply brilliant.

across the board ok, and that is saying something.

exco acknowledged that. and din acknowledged that at another separate meeting. we did ourselves proud by outdoing ourselves! hahaha...what a day.

and i am so proud of abu for saying the things he said that day, for standing up for what he felt should be made known to all. and i am glad to have been there to see him give them a piece of his mind. i really have great people around me you know. congrats abu, if you ever read this.

then we went to pizza hut for some relationship patching... i think that went well. the meal was superb. hahahah... adea bought me a gift, that moved me so much. a pocket watch, in a silverish case, inside a cat bag. and she said some really nice things. adea sis, i appreciate the gift and will treasure it very much. thank you.

then went to pray at al-mukminin, and then went bowling with the group at chevrons...

'twas a really fun outing.

till abu sent me home and made me cry with his words again, even though i promised not to.

abu, strike one!

PS: i want a lock of hair, weird me.

exco baru

congrats to my friends for their appointments to exco NTUMS!

they are namely, president Hafiz Mustaffa, vice pres muslim Ahmad Bakhtiar, vice pres muslimah Suhaila Ahmad Samsi, and last but not least, Training Development Officer, Rezuan!!

the task ahead is not small, and i can see their jittery faces and associated jittery hearts wondering what the future holds and what is in store for them. well, brothers and sisters...

RELAX.

your appointments came to you by His Grace and Mercy, first of all. and i believe that you are all thankful to Him. secondly, it was by syura that you were all elected, so obviously, your capabilities and weaknesses were intricately monitored and your suitability to the posts, scrutinised. and when the decision came out, it was to the best interest of all parties and to the society as a whole that you were elected. thirdly, it is testament to your abilities and how you have conducted yourself in the past year among your peers. so either extrinsically or intrinsically, you have proven yourselves worthy to be entrusted with the responsibilities.

while some of you may not have total faith in the syura, i ask that you trust the Divine Plan. everything that happens has a reason and a hikmah behind it. and all will be revealed in due time. there may be greater things in line for ALL of you, where you are now. believe.

for the new exco, i am so happy for you. insya Allah, where i am i will still be rooting for the whole lot of you, exco or not. but i hope you remember what we have achieved together as a team, when we are not in our appointments. that team still exists now, so never forget to tap on the team's potential. remember our roots and humble beginnings together and realise that we will never succeed, unless together.

"with great power comes great responsibility, but even ants can move mountains if they work together..."

my personality cocktail

How to make a Nizar
Ingredients:

1 part friendliness

3 parts silliness

3 parts leadership
Method:
Combine in a tall glass half filled with crushed ice. Add a little lustfulness if desired!

a journey to be remembered

i wrote before, that i was anticipating the end of the camp, when we would sit down and say, "Alhamdulillah, that was a great camp. Great job everyone."

that day has come and gone. and it is my turn to express my feelings.

it is not easy to adequately cover the myriad of emotions that ran through me during the camp itself. but i shall try to encapsulate what i can in my writing, and hopefully, this would be enough for those who read. the rest that remains unwritten is up for inferences, and secretly for those who went through the camp itself and now find themselves lost for words too.

VENATORIS '04 is a journey to be remembered.

I remember when i was invited to join the committee as the camp coordinator. At the insistence of Rezuan, i accepted, but never really knowing the things that i would be getting myself into. The first time i got to know the committee, i was not really very clear as to the direction of the camp, and as to the synergy and dynamics of the people involved. My judgements of characters were not very helpful. I realised that i needed to be more involved and get to know them.

There were the initial meetings that i attended, but they proved to be too short for me to make relevant analyis on people. the few that i knew were namely, Rezuan and Iqbal. Even Abu, Syaiful, Nasir and my co-coordinator Fadiah were distant people at that time. Then when the exams drew near, and we had to push meetings till after they passed, i lost touch with all that i needed to know.

after the exams, there was a lethargy in everyone which meant slow work. but the spirit eventually picked up, but not without the conflicts and disagreements and spats between individuals, departments and committees. I remember at a point in time when almost everyone was at everyone else's neck. fortunately the disagreements were settled before they degenerated further. the spirit of VENATORIS blazed in everyone's mind and pushed us onwards towards that common goal, now successfully achieved.

but at that period of time, i had many commitments - work, school application, tarian. and i am sorry to say that i had to give up much time, and VENATORIS did not receive my full attention.

I hereby apologise to the committee for my absence from the many meetings that i was supposed to be there for. I apologise to Abu for not being there beside him when he needed me. I apologise to Fadiah for not being around to take the brunt of the appointment and leaving her open to all the criticisms and bad misconceptions. I apologise to Rezuan and the programmers for not being there to support their work when they were placed under fire from all sides. I apologise to Suhaila and Saliha for not assisting in publicity till late. My contributions to this camp are not much at all, but you all did a wonderful job nonetheless.

but as someone who sat on the boundaries and looked in while you all worked, i would have to say that the success of the camp was nothing short of a miracle, brought about by pure intentions, faith, brotherhood, strength and unity.

and these were indeed values that i re-learnt in the camp. most importantly, faith. i never truly realised how much faith bound us together. faith gave us the pure intentions, faith gave us strength, faith bestowed unity among us, and faith blessed us with brotherhood. faith was what made us work together and rise above our petty selves, faith brought us our ideas and limits. faith was what moved the camp.

there were times when i felt insulted, there were times when i felt that certain comments were unnecessary, there were times when i felt that i was not doing enough, there were times when i was utterly stretched, there were times when i was angry at those i loved, there were times when i was lost and unsure, there were times when i just could not figure out what i was feeling.

but all that became unimportant.

at the end of the camp, when we sang together, i felt our spirit. when we apologised to each other, all was forgiven. when you said those words that meant so much to me, i brought it into myself and held on to it.

when we cried together, when i kissed you and you kissed me and we held each other close, that was what mattered to me.

i was never very good at partings. so i comfort myself by saying that that was not a parting at all. and i will try my best to make that true. you all never really lost me, i am always beside you when you need me.

and i know that i never really lost you too, for our gift to each other is eternal.

Rezuan, Iqbal, Abu, Nasir, Syaiful, Hakim, Hafiz Kamal, Shahih, Jabbar, Hafiz Mustaffa, Ashraf, Din, Rohaizad, Lukman, Rizal, Hafiedzul, Herman, Siddiq, Ahmad, Firdaus, Fadiah, Farhana, Farhanah, Marlina, Mazlinah, Firza, Karima, Shikin, Suhaila, Miza, Khairiah, Shahisdah, Ira, Suhaila, Maisarah, and all those whom i may have missed out...

I love you, my brothers and sisters. May Allah guide and bless you all.

FOC rundown

VENATORIS '04 came to a close on Thursday 15 July.

Day 0 went by rather uneventfully. I came late, we had some last minute meetings for the opening ceremony, and i presented the roleplay that we were all a part of. we spent the nite at Asy-Syakirin Mosque, but not before we made the videos of the princess who was to be kidnapped...that was cute. I apologise to Brother Hafiz AGAIN for having thrown him on his bum...utterly unintended... :)

Day 1 was kind of a rush...participants arrived earlier than expected, and we had to begin our socialising and preparations all at the same time so that the participants do not get bored. it was very nerve-wrecking when you see that things had yet to be done, but the participants were already there waiting...thankfully, the Exco were there to assist in the initial mingling... everyone had to hurriedly prepare the room, change into their "costumes" and run the roleplay through their heads. some last minute orders, and we were off.

the opening act was very very well received, with Abu as the King, Fadiah as Royal Advisor, Rezuan as Minister of War, Syaiful as Minister of Health, Nasir as Minister of Home Affairs, Iqbal as Minister of Expeditions, Karima as Minister of Information and the Arts, Shikin as Minister of Foreign Relations, Hakim, Ridzwan, Firdhaosh, Hafiz Kamal and Taufiq as the Generals, Siddiq and Shahisdah as the Warlords, Mazlinah and Marlina as the King's attendants, Farhanah as the Chef, Suhaila, Firza and Shahih as Heralds, Marliana as the Wise Woman, the Station Masters as the Dark Knights, the Facilitators as the Guards and lastly, yours sincerely as the Chronicler.

Everyone was really spontaneous, and very sporting despite last minute changes... and that made the whole play all the more interesting and amusing to watch.

We then carried on with our ice-breakers, and the the 2KM2 game, which made the newly inducted warriors get to know each other as well as the school. A few glitches in control issues came up, but was quickly taken care of. The weather held up fine, except for a part during the 2KM2 where the station had to be relocated due to lightning concerns. There was a shield presentation ceremony and then the groups were given their tasking for the next night, which was presentation night. After Isya', the groups moved to Hall 11 for a very interesting night game, Hunt Or Be Hunted. I was deeply impressed with the efficacy of the programmers in making sure that the limits of contact were adhered closely to (quite ingeniously too, if you ask me...) and how they were able to tweak the games to suit the objectives while not compromising any values... their resourcefulness in modifying what was needed really deserves applause and credit...

when the game ended, everyone was transported to Mendaki where they would spend the night. The committee had a late night debrief which left me with a bad taste in my mouth - but i was too tired to bother... i was incoherent myself... to the point that i could not understand what Rezuan was trying to tell me... hahahah

Day 2 began with a late subuh on my part... i was very reluctant to wake up... hahaha... I ensured that everyone was ready for the briefing by 0800 and let Iqbal and Jabbar take over the emceeing for the morning... which i must say, they did a much better job at working the crowd than i ever could... made me wonder why i was needed in the first place... the surveillance video camera of the princess being kidnapped was shown, and the faces of the culprits shown in mugshots were also flashed... the participants then set off for the next activity which would take them all the way to maghrib... Amazing Race... they travelled from Mendaki to Pasir Ris to Shahih's grandmother's place to Darul Ma'wa to East Coast Park to Plaza Singapura to Al-Falah Mosque to Masjid Tentera then back to NTU before they rescued the beautiful princess (thank you Farida!!!) from the clutches of the evil warlords... and amazingly, they did it much much faster than we had all expected... these participants were really really on...

After the rescue was complete, they were given time to rest and prepare for their presentations that would take place later on. With five virtues to act out - integrity, wisdom, brotherhood, trust and courage -  the groups were really entertaining and creative. It gave me heart when i saw them re-enacting the roleplay, which showed that it was really something cool for them... WEEE!!! they took inspiration from many things, Taegukgi, Ali Baba, the roleplay, Internet... it was really fun!

Then the highlight of the camp came. Hunt for Faith. The weather did not look very promising in the evening. There were hints of wet weather, which would have caused the event to be called off. Many of us, especially the programmers, were worried, because this was the one event which cannot and should not be cancelled.  The cemetary walk had many objectives which were crucial to making VENATORIS '04 a true Muslim Camp. Alhamdulillah, the weather held up, and instead of rain, the entire grounds became misty and dark, adding a mystical and sombre touch to the already unique atmosphere. Almost everyone went through the activity (the exception being those who did not feel they were in appropriate attire) and gave positive reviews, stamping our successful conduct of the activity. We headed off to Masjid Al-Firdaus for the night and rested our tired heads till the time for reveille came.

Day 3 was the only relaxed day for us all. We left the mosque close to 11.00am, arriving in NTU just in time for the final physical activity, Sendaloka Bersama Syai. Apparently, the long rest at the mosque was enough to give everyone the energy needed to carry out the really active games during the telematch and extreme soccer. Everyone took part in the games - participants, Adhoc and even the Exco. It was an uplifting end to the events of the camp.

We then had lunch and zohor, afterwhich the participants packed their belongings up. We initiated a short game which culminated in the surprise birthday party for the July babies, and then went on to the closing. After the knighting ceremony and the presentation of prizes, Shamir from NUS gave a short invitation speech to the participants for the NUS FOC camp. Then we viewed a powerpoint presentation put together by Hafiz Mustaffa on the activities of the camp. Brother Luqman gave a final speech on behalf of Exco, and we had a sing-a-long session. Finally Brother Firdaus led us in the closing du'a and we shook hands and hugged each other.

I present to you, the 4 days of VENATORIS '04.

murshidah

this girl is so cute.

i have to write about what happened today when we met.

well, she came to the jamming studio, and without warming up and harmonising, she sang into the mike, as she was supposed to (let's give her credit for trying). but it came out wrong and off, and i couldn't help myself but laugh. and nura apparently knew what i was laughing about (we click on like the weirdest of levels, especially spotting people),and astonishingly, she said, "ok shidah, you will stick to poetry reading, and nizar you be the back up ok?" talk about blatantness...hehehe...

she commented that razak looked different today. we all said, "he was not wearing his spectacles." and she was like, "oh a'ah..."

then when we were having our dinner/ supper at A&Z, there was a conversation on weblogs. the conversation went on, until i asked murshidah, "do you know where my blog is?" to which she immediately replied, "yah, it's near to the mosque, i think i can recognise where it is..."

cute.

and we met faris for the first time today...they make an even cuter couple...nura was enthralled, that lusty one.

friday blues

i just completed the first week in school.

it is truly an experience and a wonder how the smallest of things can make your day or break it.

firstly, school. school to me now is an adventure waiting to be enjoyed everyday. i can see myself there, studying and doing things together with my mates, and getting along very very well with my tutors, lecturers and mentors, and most importantly, having fun. the environment there is serious so different from what i had in NTU, and i am very certain that this is one really wise move that i have made - earthshaking, yes, but wise all the same.

but there are things that i am giving up or at the very least, compromising.

most importantly, my faith.

it is very important for me to attend friday prayers, because the meaning for me is more than a compulsory service. but my time table actually does not make any room for me to attend friday prayers, apparently a fact that was overlooked by the planners. so i had to change my timetable with the other group, with whom i have not yet bonded with. and i feel really sad that i had to leave my original group. but that is a choice that i had to make. but there would still be days where i may not be able to attend...but that is a major sacrifice that i have to make, and i hope that due to circumstances i will be forgiven.

school commitments will also need me to give up quite a bit of my socialising time. the projects and assignments are really coming and starting to pile. as of today, we already have 4 projects and assignments (either individual or group) to be completed. in order to ensure a job well done, i will be sacrificing many social activites, if i find that i cannot cope (which most probably will be the case). so my advanced apologies, if in the course of my study, i appear to have disappeared.

the first week actually saw me asking for more than $200 from my mother for notes, administration and miscellaneous expenses. i am ashamed to ask so much, and knowing that i have to ask for much more. i do not want to be a financial burden. my concession pass already costs $100. it scares me to think of the expenses that i have incurred and the expenses that i will be incurring in the time to come. uniforms, compulsory textbooks, funds... i have tried to apply for the sponsorship, but no news yet. i really need it.

with all these in mind, and my running from NYP to NTU to Cairnhill to home and out again the next day wore me down really thin. last nite, on my way back, as i was walking and thinking about this, it started to drizzle.

and without my consciousness, i cried with the rain.

VENATORIS '04 update

the camp is fast approaching.

in 7 days' time, all your hard work will come to bear fruit.

my brothers and sisters have given their all and more in planning and ensuring that the camp is as interesting and as exciting and as inspiring as it can be. i am glad to see that differences have been resolved and that conflicts are at a minimum. truly, they are all seeing the need for restraint and patience. and i really respect them for that.

and working together towards a common goal, that is what is most important.

i already asked that a letter be given to me to excuse me from school, so that i can attend and give my fair share of work and effort (which once again, i apologise for my lack of throughout the whole planning stage). i hope it works.

and i am anticipating the day we all sit down, when its over and done with, and we say,
"Alhamdulillah, that was a great camp. Great job everyone."

and the tears will flow once more...

NYP...HERE I COME!!!

i had actually intended to write this some time ago, but due to commitments elsewhere...it did not come out...so here goes...

some time in the past week...

without my noticing, time has crept up slowly and suddenly i feel it tapping my shoulders. school is so near, yet i failed to prepare for it. well, i dunno how to prepare for it actually. but i guess the adage time flies when you are enjoying yourself really does apply to me. only in my terms, time flies when you are busy. i have to think of enrolment, tuition subsidies, sponsorships, tarian, awallah dondang, FOC... sigh sigh... but i really should ready myself for the uncertainties of life in a new school... after all it was not a small decision made...i need to make it work... and i need to work...

2nd July 2004

had my orientation in school...and found out that there were only 3 guys in the course...but the other 2 guys were really cool and friendly, and we immediately found common ground...army...but that aside...we had a boring introductory session, which was redeemed by a half day amazing race-cum-treasure hunt which in my opinion, really managed to gel everyone together and bond us pretty well...for a half-day event that is, so kudos to the organising committee...and OT won the first prize for the day and that just really augmented our high spirits... made a lot of friends... i think school is gonna be a really exciting and interesting affair, what not with the managers and mentors who are ever so friendly and approachable... i am falling in love even as i write this... but my only worry is my religious obligations...i hope that gets settled soon...

5th July 2004

first day of school...i arrived in good time...but transport is gonna cost a whole lot of money...and i need that sponsorship to alleviate the burden of asking from my parents...and i need to be self-sustenant...had some lectures and found the topics really interesting...and as pointed out by the lecturers, our subjects' depth are really not poly level, it was more towards university level... i dunno how comforting that is...but we shall see how...and had to choose our electives today...and guess what happened...i could not get the one i wanted - conversational mandarin...so i opted for something that was closer to the heart - appreciation of the arts...hahahha...then i started thinking. i did not want to go to arts and social science in NUS, and neither did i apply to medicine. but now in OT, i am doing sociology, arts appreciation and pseudo-medicine. hehehhee...talk about durian runtuh.

but i am loving it so far.

so far.

kilir jati and tarian unlimited

30th june was the fateful day of the performance...Malam Kilir Jati...the crowd was great with many big names in the cultural circles coming to see the newly choreographed works of the dance groups in singapore... well, i dunno how i really did on the performance itself, but some people said that i made very obvious boo boos...but hey...kata baru mula kan...so i cant be blamed...i tried to give my best, and i think that i did manage to put in about at least 80%...if not for the tight corset-like bengkung that i forced myself to wear...but the overall vibe i got was a positive one...so i am not going to complain much...and we made new friends again with the other kumpulans...just my social bee speaking there...so fun!!!

but i guess the more eventful thing to write on would actually be the rehearsals...kilir jati rehearsals were not really a bed of roses - from the flare-ups, to the apparent miscommunication and consequent misunderstandings, the politics, the leadership issues - the list goes on and on as to what went wrong and what could be considered a conundrum of unpleasantness... i will just touch in brief as to what the main highlights were...

1) TAPAC stinks of cat-poo
2) Changes in dance all the way till the last day
3) Cohesion issues between seniors and juniors
4) Insensitive bastards pooping from their oral cavities
5) Communication problems between EVERYONE
6) Physical and mental fatigue
7) Over-sensitive ME

so all these highlights put together really churned out a veritable mess. during rehearsals that is. but of course, inevitably the performance would also be affected. so there.

thank goodness for gay peeps who really made everything bearable at least (and no, i am not referring to you amin)

and if kilir jati was not enough, we had perkampungan tari like 4 days after that. that was another highlight in my tarian career. we had a full run through on the basics and the intricacies of tarian, which culminated in our choreographing a piece for assessment. hehehe... we had some practice in the morning on the beach...really cool...and had musical and vocal inclusion in tarian... the second day, me and sapee choreographed a piece called "hayat" which we got the highest marks for (85/100) and though i dun want to sound arrogant, i am actually pretty proud of it, and when abang kamil chose me and rozzy to choreograph the finale piece, i was actually filled with quiet pride... and most importantly, i passed the camp. hehehehe, not that the points really matter, but only 3 people passed...hahahaha...

tarian is actually going somewhere. that's good. i am happy. :)

finally or...

sigh, a little scare there for me with regards to my application to NYP...the medical checkup had a little hitch which left me 1)distressed unnecessarily, 2)almost suing the examining doctor for causing me the unnecessary distress, 3)surfing the net for management of hypertensive patients, 4)knowing more about hypertension and 5)taking drugs. just a small issue with regards to the definition of uncontrolled hypertension and i was set rolling on all the above...

but one fateful check up, a high pressure reading, a second opinion, some propranolol, lots of starfruit, bittergourd, celery and plain water, and a second successful reading... and i am now on my way to completing the forms, readying them for submission early tomorrow. yay.

30th june is kilirjati. and we still got some way to go before the characterisation of the dance is complete. i am kinda spiffed out...what not with awallah dondang training and work in the way. and i so need to go back to foc as well. so work is finally coming to an end by next tuesday, wednesday is the dance performance and after that, insya Allah, we are homebound my NTU brothers and sisters.

awallah dondang is also coming along fine, miss the group more than i thought, and we have a name now...KITSITRA...cool aye?

friends are in and out of trouble and distress themselves, i pray for their peace and happiness despite all that happens. and that at the end of the day, everything will turn out for the better hopefully. just have faith and strength. and remember, if i am not around, you can always turn to Him.

finally things are falling in place.

endings and beginnings.

addition to kembara

after my closing supplementations, i was crying like a babe. and someone totally unexpected came up to me to hold me, and i was very moved by that action. and i will forever remember that he came up to me to comfort me, when no one else thought they could. and it felt good holding a dear friend and being held, after so long.

i dedicate this entry to that someone, who showed that indeed he was made of a different quality than other people, and that indeed he deserved to be as loved as he is.

for that day, i am indebted for life.

zul, blessed be.

forgiven

and on the night of my birthday, i wrote in to tell you about azfar, someone who took four months to apologise to me.

but it was well worth the wait.

that night, i was gifted with most wonderful words, and a torrent of emotions i never expected to come from him. and however torn my heart was, it is now healed and stronger than ever. and insya Allah, things will take a turn for the better from now onwards.

just a word of advice to all, when you think you should apologise, please do not let your ego stand in the way. and really think of the worst thing that could happen if you did not apologise and then be motivated by it. we are all just human.

and we need each other.

more than we think we do.

the wonders of His Will

for those who have been reading my blog tag-board, and has no idea, this is what it is all about. and the entry is belated by about 2 days.

alhamdulillah, i have successfully gotten myself into the occupational therapy course in nanyang polytechnic, a course which really really calls to my multi-faceted nature [ :) ] as a social creature, someone who is interested in the health and medical industry and someone who wants to help people. alhamdulillah, my prayers were answered, and not without the augmentary prayers of my dearest family and friends, who undyingly gave their support, despite the possible circumstances of my departure.

for understanding and empathising with me, and for standing by me through it all, my deepest gratitude. and most of all, may we all achieve our desired successes in all our efforts, and may we obtain His Pleasure in everything that we do. Alhamdulillah.

and it could not come at a better time either.

on 16 june, i was supposed to register for my subjects in civil engineering. and i was totally at a loss as to what i was supposed to do. working and without internet access at the warehouse, i did not want to call up any of my friends to do the registering for me. but as i was contemplating it, my mother gave me a call to tell me the good news. alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah, alhamdulillah.

so i did not need to register for my subjects after all. insya Allah, all will be well.

and when i went home to check the letter, it was dated 15 june 2004. coincidence, or gift? you decide.

Tuesday, June 15, 2004

on this fateful day...

though no words would be enough to heal the pains i have caused you, please believe me when i say that my only wish is for peace between us. i apologise with all my heart for all the wrongs that i have done to you, and apologise for not being strong enough to overcome my limitations. i hope that life has been kinder to you and that you find peace in my absence. best wishes on your 22nd birthday. sincerely, azfar.

it took him about four months to apologise.

and had to do it on my birthday.

KemBARA '04

i am still reeling from the overwhelming emotions brought about by the camp. the friends, the late nights, the scrambles and most importantly, the kids. you never expected that you would become so attached over just a period of 3 days, would you? but we did, and in fact, i feel that everyone, regardless of appointment, did.

when the kids first came, they were rowdy and loud (not to say that that was bad...) but at some points in time, they were really becoming unbearable because of their over-active and boisterous natures. some facilitators were very close to giving up, and some lost their voices but fortunately, all never lost their drive to keep on trying. the activities that were held did not only test our patience as elders, but also our tenacity as a group and our physical endurance. the kids were not easy to manage, many being very mischievous. and this was of course made worse by the fact that some kids could not get along with each other, in a typical kid's sense - small trivialities and disagreements. and we had to defuse the conflicts many a times to prevent anyone from getting hurt.

the first day, i shall honestly say, was horrendous.
the second day, however, was truly pleasurable.
and the third day, absolutely heart-wrenching.

it was all about getting to know the kids better, and understanding their psyche, and at the very least, getting through to them on some levels. and how i tried, with varying success.

for me, the first high point came on the first day when the kids started calling me "big boss". for me it showed a certain sense of acceptance and identity from the kids to me, and at least it showed the much-hoped for appreciation for my efforts in getting to know them.

the second day, at east coast park, i was imam for zuhur prayers. before we prayed, rahimin came forward and asked me questions on being an imam and the prayers. that was the second time, i felt that we were achieving something in the camp. then after prayers, i announced a tag that was found and wanted the owner to come forward. the owner was rahimin. the faci who found the tag sort of gave rahimin a scolding, which rahimin did not take very kindly to, and he began to cry. i tried to placate him but when my efforts did not get through, i started to break down together with the kid.
that was when i had a first taste of how the facis truly felt trying to handle difficult kids. but when other people took over, they merely comforted him with an ice-cream, and he was all better. sigh, talk about understanding kids. and he forgot the whole incident by the time he reached the camp site from east coast park. while he could have forgotten easily, adults like me don't. i will just take it as a good lesson learnt.

the third day, the kids were really less rowdy and there was a marked improvement in terms of the kids' cooperation and general behaviour. and that was the day when we could actually see how much respect they had for their elders and how much they did not really mean to behave the way they did.

abu choreographed a dramatic beginning to the day's activity. he kicked a dustbin and scolded the facis in front of the kids, which got the kids really shocked. the funny thing was, when he was giving instructions to the facis, the kids immediately reacted to the instructions without the facis needing to tell them. that, to me, was truly reflective of how they did not want to get anyone into trouble and how young they really were. the game that followed required them to rescue a faci from their group who was kidnapped. and they actually cried out for their facis whole-heartedly. it was very touching and most moving to see them beg for the release of their facis.

then later on in the day, to complete the whole activity, abu had another pretense. he called four kids up to the front, stating discipline as the problem. the kids were really not ready for what was to come. then when the kids were already standing in the front, the adults came in with... 4 birthday treats, singing "Allah selamatkan kamu". and the kids in front cried. and i could not help myself either. i cried too while comforting them.

hafiedzul had another reflections session on the kids' appreciation of their parents. that was truly difficult to sit through, especially when you had to comfort the kids who were tearing silently. it was a moving experience, especially when you know the kids come from broken backgrounds and they were here for that love which was missing in their lives. and that behind the facades of toughness and rebelliousness, they were all still children with sensitive hearts and a most emotional nature.

and before the kids left, i had a closing du'a ceremony. i cried openly there, and so did many of those who were in the room with me. the kids hugged their facis after that, and left me a torrent of tears.

just before they boarded the bus, i went around and salamed the boys. and i prayed for their keep in God's hands. and may they be well always. i waved to them in the bus and blew kisses and my eyes became watery again. sigh.

i never expected this. never.
and even as i write this now, i am tearing.

but i will do it all over again.

giving it up

it only recently struck me, that in my pursuit of OT, i will be losing some other things that were in my plans for a long time.

poly and uni terms begin differently. and if i get into OT, i will not be able to join FOC. and with that in mind, i had to reluctantly give up my camp coordinater post to fadiah, whom i am sure will be a brilliant CC. it's just that there were so many things that i wanted to do in the camp, or at least i know i could do in the camp. there were so many things i wanted to be involved in. there were so many people i still wanted to get to know. there were so many emotions i wanted to feel and revel in throughout the whole process. there were just so many things...so many.

when it first dawned upon me that my involvement had to be cut short, i was really really depressed. the idea of not being able to contribute as effectively, the idea that i am now out of the circle, the idea that i will not be meeting my dear beloved friends, it all brought me to a state of gloom. and that gloom pervaded my being even throughout the mock camp. abu felt it, and tried to make me feel better, but at the end of the day, its really just me.

i put this as an apology, that i never meant to pull out of the camp, not in any way. and the fact that i had to pull out really breaks my heart to a million pieces. no words can adequately describe this feeling that i go through now, not when i was so geared up, and not when suddenly, i find myself stranded in the middle of nowhere.

lost.

i really love you guys so much. that camp would have bolstered our friendship even more. but OT is a choice that i have to make. and i thank you all for understanding. at this moment when we need each other even more than ever, i had to leave. but i do not leave you with nothing at all. my prayers for your successful integration, my prayers for your fantastic planning, and my prayers for the ultimate memorable camp that NTUMS has ever seen.

and my prayers and love for you all.

i am here whenever you need me.

VENATORIS will always be our brain-child, and our effort together. and i thank you all for the memories.

OT interview

3 june was the fateful day, the day upon which my whole future depends on, the day which i had been waiting for since the last 2 months...

i took the whole day off from work, just so that i could prepare myself physically and mentally for what was to come. i knew that i should have been feeling nervous, but the night before, there was a sort of quiet calm which left me, well, rather unemotional. as how shafur put it, its the calm before the storm. i could not agree more.

i woke up feeling very unsure of how the interview would be. i dressed myself in a two-tone long-sleeved shirt with brown pants, and packed my bag, so as to give a professional look. gelled my short hair up as much as i could, to give an impression of youthful zest and set off, not before asking for my mother's blessings and prayers. i took a cab to nanyang poly and gave the admissions personnel a call.

then i was invited into the interview room.

there were 3 on the panel, though only 2 were interviewers. mr yap from PT, mr lee from OT and miss teng from admissions office. i was introduced to them, and i shook their hands and seated myself across the table.

mr lee began by asking about my friends in OT, namely siddiq and melissa. so i told them my relations. they then went on to ask about my university education, and since i already pre-empted the "why the change from engine to OT, why the change from uni to poly, what do you see yourself doing in OT, how are you doing in uni" questions, i shall not delve too deeply, apart from saying that these questions have had their answers prepared and so can be considered well answered.

we then went on to my background and family support to the change in course of study. i told them my role in the army, and my position as a leader and overall in charge of the management of casualties. i told them about my hospital attachment which was the primary motivating factor to entering the healthcare industry. i told them about my social nature and the need to interact with people rather than machines and technical work. i told them about the change in mindset that i effected in my parents with respect to poly education.

there were of course some interesting questions that they posed.

Q: How many years were you in University?
A: Just a year, I have just completed my first year.
Further response from them: Oh, then no problem with the tuition grant, you are still eligible. (is this a positive response or what?)

Q: Why OT and not PT?
A: As I understand it, PT involves a lot more physical handling of injuries and rehabilitation of these injuries. OT on the other hand, involves other aspects such as mental health, environmental and social factors in the rehabilitation process. I want to engage myself in a wider range of human activities. I believe that OT can provide me with a course of study that fits my interests better.

Q: As you know there are many people who are applying for OT. It is very competitive. So why should we choose you?
A: You should choose me because you yourself agreed that my decision to change from Uni to Poly is indeed a big sacrifice and it shows a great deal of determination from me. I hope that that fact will bear some weight in your decision-making. But apart from that, you should definitely choose me because of my background in the medical and healthcare industry, as well as the experience that I have had in handling patients. My experience in leading a group towards a common goal would also be valuable in projects. All in all, I am sure that you will definitely find me an asset for OT.

Q: If there were a stroke patient, who is now totally unmotivated to carry on with life, and feels that rehab is utterly useless, what will you do to help him/her?
A: The approach towards such a patient has to be a very integrated one. There may be many ways which we can actually help the patient, but what matters is that the approach is a multi-faceted one. We can perhaps effect small changes in the rehab methods that we use, we can change the environment that the patient is exposed to, we can work towards a greater family support. All of these changes must be monitored and the patient's responses duly observed. If the patient's response is positive, then the modifications should be made permanent and improved upon. Otherwise, trial and error would eventually come up with a suitable solution towards the problem. Once again, most importantly, you have to approach the patient from many ways and styles.

Q: Apart from Bahasa and English, what other languages can you speak?
A: I can speak a bit of Mandarin (this sentence was spoken in Mandarin to prove a point)

That was among some of the more interesting questions that were posed to me.

after the interview, i gave siddiq a call, and related to him the interview. and he said the question on the stroke patient was exceptionally well-answered. apparently, i used proper OT terms which scored points, seeing that i was new to it.

just now, melissa said that she met up with mr lee, and mr lee actually asked her about me. and he REMEMBERED MY NAME. melissa said that there was a positive undertone to the conversation she had with mr lee about me.

so that's the interview. although i really did not feel any tingling feeling, at least i did not leave the place feeling bad at all. when i think back about it, i actually feel pretty good. but i guess this is just me taking my precautions, and having done all i can, i am leaving it all now to God.

friends, please pray for me. i really want to go into this course and i feel i can really perform and succeed here. so please pray for my successful entry, and God bless you all for your prayers.

Ilahi anta maqsudi wa ridhaka matlubi mahabbataka wa ma'rifataka...
Bismillahi tawakkaltu 'ala Allah, la hawla wa la quwwata illa billah...

fun-filled days, mood-chilled heart

me and nura went to the awallah dondang briefing session on tuesday afternoon. and while they presented their ideas and concepts, nura and me felt that it was going to be a really fun and exciting and ultimately, successful performance. we could feel the vibe, because the whole organisation was really tight. and this time round, there would be no screw ups. nura and myself have some really cool ideas to the conceptualisation of the performance, and i hope that the ideas will keep on flowing and integrating themselves. and all in all, i hope that the ideas can actually manifest and realise themselves for the actual performance. because i am sure that if our concepts can be manifested, this performance will be one to remember for a long time.

awallah dondang will happen on 31 july. kilir jati will happen on 29 june. two big-scale performances back to back. two huge commitments. one not so huge person to be involved. sigh. i think i am going to be really stretched, but in a good way.

but nura went out of her way to invite the idiot back. and i have to bear with it. because i am doing it for those who are worth doing it for, and not the other way round. and i have to live up to my words. so lucky them to be those who are worth doing it for. because otherwise, i would not have bothered in the least.

went to westmall, met with ratna and shikin. miss them too, and had a great conversation, in typical old friends' style. want to do it more often with them. then met abang maizal and terrence and amin abang maizal's friend and fat bitch and fat bitch's friend hide (pronounced he-they, japanese style) where a furious discussion on the business proposal of an arts bistro went underway. terrence was interested in investing...$50K at that...what a friend...i hope things turn out for the best.

wednesday, i met up with old bitch and fat bitch. had gelare ice cream twice because chambermaid gave us a discount. had pizza hut with the bitches in between. miss chambermaid a lot, and chambermaid misses us too. miss the old times when we were all happy together. and all were happy with the meeting. and then met with fat bitch's friends at lido for harry potter: the prisoner of azkaban. it was a brilliantly dark, mature and satisfying portrayal of the book. the characters were all grown up...yummy.

had my OT interview just now, will write about it in another entry. also went to the LOTR exhibition, where i wanted to buy so many things, but sadly, i did not have the money for them. the exhibition was pretty interesting, with so many things that could be really studied and examined. i was simply awed by the whole affair being put together, and the genius behind the making and realisation of LOTR. someone had said that it was not worth the admissions fee. well that someone clearly did not have the patience to go through things as how they should have. typically an idiot. me and suhaila had a really good time there. we are more aware now of the effort that went into making an epic come to life...yeah.

then someone had to spoil the day. if you are reading this friend, yah you did. blaming me for my advice, good or bad, is really not the way to go. if you can't take advice, do not go around asking for it, especially if you took it and things did not turn out the way you expect. i am not a prophet, with the ability to foresee how things would turn out. i hate being placed in the hot spot when clearly, it was your lack of sense and judgement that screws things up, not my words. so i am not giving you any more advice, because you, in danger of becoming an idiot to me, are proving yourself unworthy of it. tread carefully. suhaila was my witness here.

so there, supposedly fun-filled days, but my mood was severely chilled by the events that came along.

what a week

its 30th may, and more than a week since i last updated. but of course as the title-head implies, it has been a truly great and busy week, with everything happening and rushing past, swirling me round and round.

let's just have a look at major events that took place from sunday to sunday.

last sunday was the K2 mock camp at mendaki...that was a really fun thing to attend. i met all the people whom i have not met for so long... it was truly a delight for me. and i was back to being a kid around everyone as i always am when i am excited...sigh, i miss the days when the camps were for us rather than by us. but from this standpoint, i guess the whole experience becomes even more meaningful. and i hope it will turn out to be just as good for the kids as it has been for me.

monday tuesday and wednesday passed by quite uneventfully, except that i am starting to get really numb hands from all the hammering at work. and the rash has disappeared completely, which only means that i had to get used to the working environment. which thankfully i am.

thursday was a short meet-up with my dear junior asri who's getting married on 6th june, CONGRATULATIONS!!! i pray that all goes well during and after the wedding for the rest of their blessed lives...and the ceremony on sunday would bring us all together again, so once more...its gonna be a social event on the calendar...so look forward to it!!! after the short rendezvous, me and tau went to catch shrek 2, which was really a great laugh... i ADORE puss in boots...those big eyes just kill me, literally... and when taufiq left to meet up with his special someone, i joined zaki and zul for the day after tomorrow, which was another nice show...the whole plot was really not that impressive, but effects and details really make up for it...so cool...

friday was half day work

saturday was busy as hell. work in the morn, had to turn down overtime in the afternoon because of a prior commitment to hosting a tarian competition (persada juara tari 2004) at cairnhill cc...i wore the shawl aidil bought me for the first time, and i looked good...so thank you...abang kamal said i was very read-y and farida said i was too firm and not kindly...oh by the way CONGRATULATIONS ON LAW!!! that was for farida for successfully getting into law... but back to my emcee skills, well everyone's a critic...hamim already got me in place for an event happening in july at the cc as a dj-mc person...see how lah about that...then after the competition, we had to go down to tapac for a combined training with the whole kilir jati performance peeps...that place stinks literally of cat-poo and the training space sucks...if we have to go there again, please for goodness sakes, get us better facilities...we had to roll around on bricked ground, with a carpet for cushioning...its no wonder some of the girls were really abused... hahahaha... then had to rush to hara to meet shafur for supper where i had to take my mendaki tuition stuff back from him, since last minute i decided to go and teach...and reached home around 1 am...and had to wake up at 8 the next morning to go tuition, and then go for FOC mock camp in school, where i finally met the rest of the NTU gang whom i missed so much, and some of whom i just met for the first time, but they really endeared to me...the activities were tiring but fun, i had a fantastically superb time trying out the games and activities planned for the new intake...my only worry is that i may not be able to help out when the time comes for the real event. everyone was asking...i am sorry...sorry...sorry...it really makes me feel depressed thinking about it...but i love you guys all, and i will help if and when i can, believe me...

so there it is.

a physical and emotional week for all to read.

regards.

rash and other stuff

1. i am nursing a bad rash. i want everyone to know. it is not really making me very happy or kind or even-tempered. so beware. but damn it i have to persevere because of the money. blardy dust mites and sensitive skin. damn them all.

2. received a call from a friend just now, who tried to make me not go for my K2 camp meetings and events. he said i would most probably not be around next semester anyways, so why bother. i got rather dissed at that comment. firstly, its a commitment that i made way way beforehand. who are you to question my priorities? secondly, my presence at YOUR appointment will not really make a difference. i will not contribute even if i go because there really is not much to say. what is this crap about a final meeting ever? its not as if we wont be ever working together again, and i can always meet up with the others on other days at my own time. dun make me the bad guy here, the uncooperative one. i did what i had to do, but some people did not. they are the ones that you should be pissed at. and this is the second time you dissed me off because of your attitude. be careful.

3. farida, remember to just go au naturel. and be kind to yourself.

4. got my interview date finally, its on 3rd June, everyone please pray for my successful transfer, and pray that it all turns out well.

5. blardy rash.

work

i started work today at my auntie's company. and it was tiring as hell. stood for a good 7 hours. now my hands are full of paper cuts, even though i wore gloves. my auntie had warned me that this job might not be suitable. but i was thinking, after army, what could be worse? well, this wasn't as bad as the army. but bad enough to set me thinking about my career options anyways.

two good things came out of this.

the work was really physical. hands and feet must work. so i sweated a lot. and since i dun bring a lot of cash, i only ate fruits for lunch. i hope by the end of the stint, i will have lost some weight. and my footache from tarian is gone, because i stood too long. ironic.

money, money, money. the initial motivation for me to even consider working in the holidays. i want to earn at least $2000 in the holidays, enough to pay off all my bills and debts, finally obtain my driving license and get a new phone. with enough to spare for later. i am hoping for extra kindness from my auntie. hehehe. nepotic ass.

my apologies to my friends who would be slugging their butts and brains away preparing for the camps. i will try to make it as and when i can, and i will definitely make an effort to keep up and attend important meetings. but meanwhiles, i am sure you guys are doing fine without me. i hope.

PS: had a dream about a friend. of the same genre as before. weird. same person, same kinda dream. and taufiq told me to write it down. but i shall be cryptic in describing it. all i will say about it:

police raid, photography shop, bath-house, invitation, "i won't do it unless you want to."

hmm. go imagine.

a cousin's wedding

WARNING:
this is a bitching story. so for those who can't stand it, carry on to other posts. but for those who carry on, it ends pretty well. so whatever.

saturday night was the dinner affair at the national orchid park. there was a quota for every family, like only three or four could attend the dinner. wtf. its a wedding and you split family like that. the worse thing is, its not the first time. no point being rich and all that, but then in trying to show off wealth and sophistication, you compromise the integrity of the family. and you served alcohols at the dinner. wtf again. thank goodness i did not go. i was initially uninvited and later, due to a poor response they asked that i come anyways. too late. two strikes against you.

sunday, i was forced to attend the "sanding" affair. fine. give face to you as eldest child to my grandfather, and to the groom, eldest grandchild. i managed to have fun there anyways. saw my cousins, met up with my grandaunties, aunties, uncles, and most importantly, the youngest few in the generation after me, my nieces and nephews...they are soooo cute... and they made the day all fine and dandy...

sigh...when will i have kids?

PS: cousin is half arab, cousin-in-law is chinese-korean. talk about exotic.

11.35pm, friday night...

in a defiant act of triumph (does that make any sense?) against the crappiness of having a curfew, suhaila, taufiq and me went to watch troy after tarian. the movie was that late. and being an epic, it lasted for a good 2 hours 45 minutes...and boy, was it an epic.

well, knowing the story beforehand really did not take away the essence of the show. it was, by the way, a really good take on the whole siege of troy story...in order to not spoil it for some people who would be reading this, but not seen the story yet, i will just say that the romance, the character depth, and the whole grandeur of the tale made the story worth it, no matter how predictable. and for the horny ones, well, there are a lot naked bodies to look at...

as tired as i was, i was glad i did not fall asleep in the theatre itself...what a waste it would have been.

wish i could say more.

maybe after tuesday.

troy

the story of troy went to the tune of some city being deceived by what was initially perceived to be a gift, but eventually turned out to be the main cause of the city's downfall.

well, to put it crudely, our tickets and the premiere yesterday were troy-ish.

can you believe that i had actually dressed up nicely, in aniticipation of a major gathering of stars? so of course the glam factor had to be there...but as we were jitterily going into the theatre and looking for our seats, it soon became apparent that we were cheated, as how the citizens of troy were.

firstly and most importantly, i got the worst seat in the house.
LIDO 1, row Y, seat 34.
i will never forget that seat number. its the left bottom-most corner of the cinema, so what i would have been able to get, would be a really distorted image of the screen and a crink in the neck at the end of the day.

secondly, i saw no stars there. my camera, clothes and charisma all were for nothing.

so, we left the cinema, even before the movie started. we could definitely watch it some other time, where the experience would be so much better.

i really felt cheated. what's the point of getting free tickets if it meant not being able to watch the movie like other people? sheesh...media corp...so crappy. what a scam.

and have i said it yet? i feel cheated.

closure for the loser

since i most probably will never say this in your face, 'cos i dun intend to speak to you anymore anyways, let my just post it up for all to read.

firstly, i really dunno what happened. and i did try to salvage what i can. but unsurprisingly, lo and lo, there was no response from your side. and three times i tried, but still, zilch. so the ball has effectively gone into your court to play, but you choose to not play. so by rights, i am relieved of responsibility.

if we go back to the time it began, surely there would have been a moment where i got dissed by your actions and apathy. when previously i took heart, you would try to know where things went wrong, this time round you chose to ignore it. and i took heart as usual. but rather than sound it out to you, i was tired as well, and just could not be bothered then to do so. to you that was a tantrum. and you had the cheek to tell others that i was pissed off at you. fine.

then came the meetings, where i am sure you felt my hostility. and please dun even think that i will ever be warming up to you again. if that is what is keeping you from reconciliating with me, then let me just put it plainly across, it is your fault. no matter what the meeting is, where, with whom, i will still be just as cold. and if you feel it, too bad.

i can so easily take all the blame, and being that kind of person, i will take the blame. i do not regret what i have done though, please do not be mistaken. i just blame myself for thinking that in some way, subtle or otherwise, i could change you. but that was where the mistake lay. i should have never thought that i could change people, i should have never thought that my love could make you a better person. i should have never seen that glimmer which gave me hope that our friendship could last. in all ways, i should not have cared to try, cared to care.

because i am still feeling the pain of it, no matter how i act, no matter what i say.
because i am still feeling the lost of it, no matter who i am with.

and my only respite, is that you are still nothing, that you are still as screwed up as you were. and i feel no remorse for your disability.

who you were, who you are, who you will be - essentially a loser with nothing.

and that is my closure for you.

kill bill 2 with the deer in the village

t'was a great outing... and i like the fact that we can make so much noise in the movie theatre (well not so much lah) and disturb other viewers enough to move them from their seats...hahahha...i still dun understand why they moved lah...seriously...

and to think that you dunno where borders is...well...we shall go out more often yeah? since you say that orchard is not your turf, let's make it your turf in the holidays...we can go out again...no we must go out again ok??

thanks for the outing again...next time you decide the food, and i decide activities...how bout that?

:)

wake up

You like snow but only if it's warm
You like rain but only if it's dry
No sentimental value to the rose that fell on your floor
No fundamental excuse for the granted I'm taken for

'Cause it's easy not to
So much easier not to
And what goes around never comes around to you

You like pain but only if it doesn't hurt too much
You sit... and you wait... to receive
There's an obvious attraction
To the path of least resistance in your life
There's an obvious aversion no amount of my insistence
could make you try tonight

'Cause it's easy not to
So much easier not to
And what goes around never comes around to you
To you to you to you to you to you...
There's no love no money no thrill anymore

There's an apprehensive naked little trembling boy
With his head in his hands
There's an underestimated and impatient little girl
Raising her hand

But it's easy not to
So much easier not to
And what goes around never comes around to you
To you, to you

get up off of it
get outta here enough already

Wake up

Wake Up, Jagged Little Pill - Alanis Morissette

i post this song in response to a conversation i had with taufiq and farida a few days ago, at separate times but talking about the same things: my take on life and attitude towards caring for others. i guess this song pretty much sums up what i was trying to put across to the both of you, especially so the first verse. while it actually sucks being in this place emotionally, you cannot help but do it because you have to protect yourself from the undesirables.

i hope the two of you can now understand better.

for love or money or everything else...whatever

just finished viewing this reality show called for love or money II. which by the way, is just stupid.

giving love a value of a million dollars and making idiots choose.

whatever is happening to the perception of love? perhaps i am being a romantic, but hey i would rather be a romantic than a materialistic asshole. at least i can live with myself and a clear conscience. game it may be, but still... mebbe i am just too jaded about this whole love thing, or mebbe i am just angst-ridden because i still have yet to experience it.

love the game, hate the players? love the players, hate the game?

love and hate are so subjective. if you ask me, hate is just an extreme of love. and therefore, there is truly no such thing as hate. but am i right here? or is hate an absence of love?

when you love and hate someone, you actually love that person.
when you hate and love someone, you still love that person.
when you hate someone, then you hate that person.

i guess i have gone through every type. but i am still hanging on to that hope that my romantic kind of love will prevail for me. as how a dear friend once said, "i am hoping for a fairy-tale love." i cannot really remember what i said to her, but i say now that there is no harm in hoping. perhaps it will come, and if it does not, at least we did not lose hope. and i do pray that you get it, in all your fantasies.

but for myself, i guess i want to just be removed.

dreams

they say that dreams are a way of looking into the mystery called life. in dreams, you see things that have happened, are happening or yet to happen. a good dream is one fortieth of prophecy. dreams are our subconscious, living in ways not possible except on their terms. we work out our anxieties and live our unexpressed lives through our dreams.

i believe in all these, for many times, i have experienced deja-vus. and remember them from the scenes that play out in my mind at night.

they say that souls call out to each other in sleep, and affinity brings these calling souls to a meeting place. at that place, these souls catch glimpses of secrets of the past, present and future. and at that place, they experience alternate lives. good or bad, is another matter altogether.

i write this, because both my sister and i dreamt of our father, who is in nigeria currently, last night. while she told me about it, she does not know that i had had a dream about our father as well.

to make it more freaky, our dreams were disarmingly coherent in terms of subject matter - family trouble.

i dont know what to make of it.

prayer

lead us to a place
guide us with Your Grace
give us faith so we'll be safe

the prayer - various artistes

approaching the end of my exams, approaching the end of first year at school after national service. need time to regroup and think about how things have turned out. many things have happened. and many more to come.

this prayer goes out to all who needs the faith and guidance to get through hard times, and hopefully at the end, all will be well and fulfilling.

spiralina, if you read this, hang in there. good coffee makes better times. and yoga tops it all off, :)
remember the triumvirate's date.

i love you all, truly.

HARA

me and taufiq were entranced by this quaint little place somewhere in bukit timah a few months ago. the place serves halal chinese tim sum. and we being the connoisseurs that we are, of course jump at every opportunity to eat non-traditional food.

the initial forays were like thursday nights after arab class. so we tended to be among the last few customers all the time, and most of the time, the last customers sitting inside the shop.

one night the landlady, now affectionately referred to as aunty nancy, approached us and asked for our help in promoting the outlet to students specifically and to our age group generally. we gave her some ideas and as the story went, we became friends, in a way. and we were the first customers to the inaugural buffet spread, the first customers to enjoy the new seats in the upper-storey, the first customers to use the tatami room. it was all good. and during our second buffet, uncle robert (the landlord) came and spoke to us of his experience in running businesses and proposed some opportunities to us, which in our excitement, we actually considered taking a break from school for a year to try out.

how things can just churn themselves from nothing.

i guess we were just there initially for the different cuisine.
but excellent service and hospitality can really, really make a difference.

and that was what kept us coming back.

and of course, the special dining privileges :)

worms that get through windows but cannot eat the apple

i write tonight in outrage of the stupid trouble that all these viruses and worms caused. my computer was infected with the sasser worm while i left it online the whole night before. apparent effects were overall slowing down of the system, plus programs could not be run without error messages popping up all over the effin' screen.

i got worried. and i got pissed.
more pissed than worried.

nobody knew what hit me when i asked for advice and help. then channelnewsasia announced the problem.

but not before i uninstalled my modem, burnt out my files, almost thrashed my computer, and pulled my already damaged hair out.

farida assisted me in the end, thanks for that, girl.
but i am still seething with quiet rage over the whole mess that i got myself into.

taufiq's prescription: an apple.

windows had better buck up or shut up.

else they gonna lose lotsa business to a fruit.
